JIM WATKINS * AVALANCHE JOURNAL

In her words: Karen Slay

Age: 42.

Job and what she likes best about it: Executive director of the Injury Prevention Coalition of the South Plains. I love it when I've educated a parent or child about a way to stay safe that they didn't know and wanted to learn about.

Family: Husband Steve; sons Jason, 18, Jerod, 16, Justin, 14, and Jesse, 10.

Pets: Dog Jasmine.

City of residence: Lubbock.

Hometown: Grew up in Pampa.

Biggest responsibility: Raising four boys to be Christian young men.

What motivates her: Seeing something that needs to be done and having fun working with others to do it.

Most recent career accomplishment: Became a nationally certified instructor of the three-hour Child Passenger Safety Technician Course.

Most recent personal accomplishment: I have read through the Bible as of Dec. 31.

Last book she read: "The Remnant" by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins.

Best decision: To marry my husband, Steve.

What she does to pamper herself: Take a nap on Sunday afternoon after church.

Mentor: My mother.

Favorite thing she's done recently: Disney World with my family Christmas 2001.

Her idea of a fun evening: Going to a Lubbock High football game and watching the band perform. (I have two in the band there.)

Something most people don't know about her: I used to teach dancing (ballet, tap, jazz).
